Black History Month 2023
Dear Parents and Children,
This October 1st marks the beginning of Black History Month. This year’s theme is SALUTING OUR SISTERS, honouring the matriarchs of movement and celebrating the crucial role that black women have played in shaping history, inspiring change, and building communities.
This month, the children will be learning and celebrating Black History and Culture. However, our learning and understanding of Black and diverse history doesn’t happen just this month, it is woven into our curriculum.
This year, each year group will have their own theme to explore Black History through, learning about significant figures from the past and the present day too. The themes are: activists, inventors, politicians, musicians, artist, sports people, and explorers and travel. The children will be presenting what they learn to their class and other classes.
The children will be learning about and creating art by the following artists: Lois Mailous Jones, Faith Ringgold, Alma Thomas, Christ Ofili, Frank Bowling, Twins Seven Seven and Sonia Boyce. The children will be able to see each other’s art work at the end of Black History Month.
We have been fortunate to have many new books that more fully represent our school community and have been added to our school library and class libraries. We hope to increase these over the coming year. The children will be selecting books to read in their class this month.
Miss Mullen will be supporting children with learning about different genres of music and devoting this month to performing work by Black musicians and performers.
Black History Month Lunch Menu - Monday 16th October. Using the book Windrush Child and Handa's Surprise - our head chef will be creating some Caribbean and African inspired dishes from the books.
Thursday 19th October - Meet the author. The Upper Juniors will be meeting the author Maria Motúnráyọ̀ Adébísí to discuss her book Kòkú Àkànbí And The Heart Of Midnight.
Year 6 Miss Writer - Black History Month 2023
Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed Black HIstory Month. We read the book Windrush Child by Benjamin Zephaniah and discussed in depth the challenging themes featured in the book. Following this, Year 6 studied the Brixton Uprising, the events that preceded it and the shifts in society following it.
We spent some time drawing in the style of Sonia Boyce and learnt about her artistic style but also her life and some of the challenges she faced and how she overcame them.
The Upper Juniors went to Norwood Picture House to attend a literacy workshop and met Maria Motunrayo Adebisi the author of Kòkú Akanbi and the Heart of Midnight.
To end our topic, Year 6 performed Emeli Sandé's song Read All About It - Part III in thier Liturgy!
